WELCH — A McDowell County man has been sentenced to 23 years in prison in connection with a 2001 homicide.
Anthony Ray Whitt, 30, of Cucumber, who was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the 2001 death of 58-year-old Dorothy Mitchell of War, pleaded guilty earlier this week to second-degree murder before his third scheduled retrial in the case, according to Prosecuting Attorney Sid Bell.
Whitt was originally convicted in 2002 of second-degree murder. However, the conviction was set aside in April 2007 by the West Virginia Supreme Court. A judge declared a mistrial in Whitt’s 2008 retrial after a juror experienced a medical condition during the trial.
