PRINCETON —
During a special session Thursday afternoon, the Mercer County Board of Education appointed Randy Peek to serve as interim head coach of the Princeton Senior High School football team to replace Ted Spadaro who announced his retirement on Monday.
Peek, 47, a Princeton native and 1983 PSHS graduate, played two seasons for the Concord University Mountain Lions before being sidelined with a shoulder injury. He most recently served as head coach of the Princeton Middle School football team, but also served two different times on Spadaro’s staff during the former head coach’s 23-year career with the Tigers. Peek also served 4 years as an assistant football coach at Athens High School.
With fall football practice starting on July 30, Peek doesn’t have much time to assemble a staff, but he said the juniors and seniors on the varsity team who attended PMS are familiar with him and he is looking forward to meeting the student/athletes from Glenwood School.
“We’ll be ready on Monday morning,” he said. “Of course, we’ll start out working on the basics — fundamentals and conditioning,” he said. “We have to get in shape first. It all depends on what Mr. (Jack) Parker (PSHS principal), Dr. Akers and the board of education decides. I do appreciate them for having confidence in me to ask me to serve as interim head coach.”
Akers said at the special session that the board of education “anticipates filling the position by Aug. 6,” she said. Akers recommended Peek for the position, the board moved and seconded her recommendation and it carried unanimously. Mary Alice Kauffman attended the meeting telephonically.
“I know it’s going to be a challenge, but I’ve always wanted this opportunity,” Peek said. “Our phone has been ringing off the hook this afternoon with people wishing me well. I appreciate the support of my family, our church family and the community.”
Peek said he worked the spread offense with the middle school team and prefers an even set across the front on defense.
