RAVEN, Va. —
A Tazewell County, Va., man was arrested Saturday on charges including attempted capital murder, DUI, refusal, driving suspended DUI related charges, with additional charges pending following his attempt to run over a Tazewell County sheriff’s deputy.
William Justice McNew, 33, of Raven, is currently being held without bond in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail following his arrest Saturday night for trying to run over Deputy Jonathan Caldwell.
Caldwell was responding Saturday night at 7:48 p.m., to a report of a domestic assault at the residence female in the Raven/Wardell area of Tazewell County. After spotting the suspect, Caldwell stopped his vehicle, drew his service weapon, approached the suspect vehicle, and attempted to talk with McNew.
McNew did not respond to Caldwell’s commands and did not look at the deputy at first. According to a Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office press release, when McNew finally looked at the deputy, the suspect “turned his steering wheel toward Caldwell and gunned the engine, striking Caldwell with his vehicle and knocking him to the ground,” according to the press release.
“As Caldwell was falling to the ground, he discharged his weapon as he feared that McNew was attempting to run him over as he had attempted to do so earlier during his involvement in the domestic dispute with (the female) household member” at the residence on Red Root Ridge Road near Wardell, Va., according to Major Harold Heatley of the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the report, the bullet from Caldwell’s service weapon entered the rear driver’s side window and struck the left front seat. “McNew was not struck by the bullet or injured from the encounter,” according to the report. “McNew continued and drove away from the site of (the) incident and abandoned the vehicle near a graveyard in the area.” The suspect was found in a front yard in the Red Root Ridge Road area.
Caldwell was transported to the Clinch Valley Medical Center where he was treated and released, according to Heatley.
