AFTERNOON UPDATE: Grenade scare at Tazewell County school a false alarm

POCAHONTAS, Va. — A report of a grenade being found this morning at a Tazewell County School proved to be a false alarm, emergency officials said.

Students were evacuated from Abbs Valley-Boissevain Elementary School following a report of a grenade being found on the school grounds. However, when emergency officials arrived on scene, they determined the report was unfounded, according to Tazewell County 911.

School officials implemented a crisis plan, and emergency procedures were followed, including an evacuation of students, according to School Superintendent Dr. Brenda Lawson.

Lawson said officials were able to determine it wasn’t a live grenade. She couldn’t immediately confirm if it was toy grenade or not.
