PRINCETON —
Mercer County Schools are seeing a slight uptick in absences due to an earlier than usual spread of influenza and strep throat.
Tom Chaffins, coordinator of pupil services with Mercer County Schools, said there has been an increase in the number of illness-related absences in several county schools.
“We did have some numbers at Athens, Melrose and Spanishburg, but that has decreased in the past few days,” Chaffins said. “It was larger than normal the first of the week. Straley and Sun Valley have larger than normal absence rates. Some of it has been flu, and six students at Straley had strep throat. It is not an epidemic, and it’s not confined to just the flu.”
