A suspect in the murder of a Bluefield man said before a Mercer County magistrate this morning that he plans to plead guilty to first-degree murder.
John Watkins was shot and killed at his home around 11:40 p.m. Monday night, Bluefield Police Chief Joe Wilson said. Watkins’ wife, Monika Watkins, was also shot and is being treated at a Roanoke Hospital. Wilson could not confirm that Monika Watkins received other injuries in the attack.
Donald Adams, 54, of Bluefield, was arrested and charged in connection with the attack around 5 a.m. on Bluefield Avenue after a short foot pursuit by officers, Wilson said.
Adams has appeared before Magistrate Susan Honaker for a detainer hearing. He told the magistrate that he intends to plead guilty.
“I’m just going to plead guilty,” Adams said.
As Adams was being led away, he admitted to killing John Watkins and injuring Monica Watkins. He stated that he had known the couple for years and had borrowed money from then on several occasions. Adams added that he had intended to rob them Monday.
“I was on drugs,” Adams said of the Monday night attack. “That’s why I’m guilty as charged.”
Adams, who said he was addicted to crack cocaine, said he was high on the drug Monday night.
“That was no excuse. That’s a poor excuse,” he said.
