PRINCETON —
One person was hospitalized after a fire at Mercer County home Wednesday morning.
According to a spokesperson with Mercer County 911 Dispatch, firefighters were called to the scene of a blaze on the 300 block of North Third Street in Princeton. The fire began around 7 a.m. according to Lt. Sean Wyatt with the Princeton Fire Department.
Wyatt said one of the occupants of the home was transported to the hospital.
“It was occupied by a husband and wife, an older couple,” Wyatt said. “They did escape from the fire, and we did have one smoke inhalation related injury. The patient was taken to Princeton Community Hospital.”
Fire officials cleared the scene around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday morning. Wyatt said the blaze severely damaged the residence.
“The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but preliminary information indicates it was the flue in the back of the house,” Wyatt said. “The house was extensively damaged in the rear, which extended into attic. The residence will be a total loss.”
In addition to the Princeton Fire Department, the Green Valley-Glenwood Fire Department, East River Volunteer Fire Department, Princeton City Police, and Princeton Rescue Squad all responded to the scene.
Wyatt said utility companies also responded to help at the scene.
