PEARISBURG, Va. —
Motion picture magic has been focused in on the mountains of Southwest Virginia, this fall as a Life Out Loud production company production creating a motion picture based on David Baldacci’s critically acclaimed novel, “Wish You Well.”
“The production crew has been filming the movie for about three weeks now,” Chris McKlarney, Giles County economic development director said. “We took them up to the Cascades (on Wednesday). It was beautiful up there with the leaves and the water fall. We rode up there on four-wheelers.”
McKlarney said that the production crew has been fun to work with. “They work long hours — usually from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or later,” he said. “They shoot every day, and it seems like Josh Lucas is in every scene.”
Josh Lucas, 41, has enjoyed a long and distinguished acting career that started when he was a teenager. Most recently, he starred as Mitch McDeere in a lead role in the television series, “The Firm.” Sadly, that project was canceled in May, but some of his other work has earned him high praise including his work in “American Psycho,” (2000) “Hulk” with Jennifer Connelly (2003), “Poseidon” (2006), and “A Beautiful Mind,” (2001).
Lucas played the role of Martin Hansen, in “A Beautiful Mind,” the academic colleague who challenged Russell Crowe’s John Nash as a graduate student at Princeton University, and then helped Nash return to Princeton’s academic community after his mental illness went into remission.
“Filming will continue until the second week in November,” McKlarney said. “Next week, they will be filming in the Giles County Courthouse.”
Because of the filming in the courthouse, one of the streets in Pearisburg will be blocked, but a town of Pearisburg spokesperson said that the detour will be well-marked to minimize any delays for people driving in town.
The Giles County Courthouse was built in 1836, and the American Civil War despite having been used by Union Army soldiers under the command of Lt. Col. Rutherford B. Hayes who advanced through Southwest Virginia in May 1862, trying to disrupt Confederate rail shipping by destroying the railhead in Radford, Va. Hayes was turned back in that attempt.
