RODERFIELD — A female juvenile died as a result of injuries she received in an all-terrain-vehicle accident at about 12 noon on Sunday in a rural section of McDowell County, according to sheriff’s deputies.
The accident occurred on Secondary Route 7/1 in Hensley Hollow near Roderfield, according to Deputy Ron Blevins of the McDowell County Sheriff’s office.
“The female juvenile who was riding the four-wheeler, lost control of the ATV and went over a 200-foot embankment,” Blevins said. “Some small shrubs stopped the four-wheeler, but the juvenile went on down the embankment.”
Blevins said that witnesses who observed the crash said the victim, who was 12 years old, climbed back up to the road and collapsed.
The victim was transported to Welch Community Hospital and by 2:20 p.m., was being prepared for a trip via ground transport to Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital. However, the girl was transported to Raleigh General Hospital where she died shortly after 6 p.m., Blevins said.
Blevins said it appeared as though the girl was alone as she was riding the ATV. Blevins did not release the name of the victim due to her age.
