Man in custody following two-state police chase

BLUEFIELD — A Mercer County man was arrested in Tazewell County, Va., as well as in Mercer County after leading police in both Virginias on an early Saturday morning chase and damaging a police vehicle during his attempt to escape authorities.

Larry S. Patrick Jr., 34, of Bluefield led police on a chase that started in Bluewell in the early morning hours, continued on the Old Bramwell Road and ended in Tazewell County when he was apprehended by officers of the Bluefield, Va., police department, according to Deputy D.A. Furches of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputy A. M. Ballard, also of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department was attempting to get Patrick to stop, when Patrick struck Ballard’s cruiser with his (Patrick’s) Chevy S-10 pickup truck, knocking off a mirror and “tearing off part of the front end,” Furches said. Furches said Ballard was not injured in the incident.

Patrick was charged with first offense DUI and attempting to elude police in Tazewell County. He made bond on the Virginia charges, but was re-arrested in West Virginia on DUI second offense, second offense of driving on a suspended driver’s license and a felony fleeing while DUI charge.

“As it is with many pursuit cases, there will probably be more charges to come of this,” Furches said.

Patrick appeared before a Mercer County magistrate, and remained in custody at the Bluefield city jail on a $10,000 cash bond, according to Furches.
