There wasn’t a single contested local race in Democrat-dominated McDowell County, but voters came out in strong numbers to participate in statewide and national political races in an unusual development in recent years.
In spite of the McDowell County’s overwhelming Democratic Party voter registration, Republican Party Presidential candidate Mitt Romney received 3,931 votes compared to President Barack Obama’s 2,086 votes. The only other Republican candidates with strong showings in McDowell County was Bill Cole, who received 2,837 McDowell County votes in the 6th State Senatorial race compared to Democrat Incumbent Senator Mark Wills, who received 2,432 votes in unofficial vote totals.
With the exception of the top of the ticket, Democratic candidates were successful in every other statewide race with U.S. Senator Joe Manchin III, polling 4,343 votes compared to 1,541 for Republican challenger John Raese; U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., received a majority of McDowell County votes with 3,776 to 2,175, for Rick Snuffer, the Republican challenger; and Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, the incumbent Democrat received 3,975 votes in McDowell County compared to Republican Bill Maloney, the Republican with 1,907 votes — all in unofficial, pre-canvassed vote totals.
One other Republican, Roger Stacy, the candidate in the 21st House of Delegates District received 459 votes in the six McDowell County Precincts compared to 422 votes for Harry Keith White, the Democratic candidate. White defeated Stacy 3,798 to 1,432, in pre-canvassed unofficial vote totals.
McDowell County voters voted for the Sheriff’s Succession Constitutional Amendment 2,311 to 1,632, votes in unofficial, pre-canvassed vote totals.

War mayor’s death: Click trial continued
The trial of Earl Click, the man who was charged along with his sister, Rebecca Lynn Hatcher, with the July 17, 2012 murder of Dr. Thomas Hatcher, mayor of War, has been continued according to the McDowell County prosecuting attorney’s office. The trial had been scheduled to start on Monday.
