BECKLEY —
Two more defendants, who were arrested as part of the on-going Bluefield Pill Initiative, were sentenced on Thursday at U.S. District Court in Beckley.
Jerry Poore, 44, and Jill Sells, 27, both of Bluewell, appeared in separate hearings before U.S. District Judge Irene C. Berger of the Southern District of West Virginia. Berger sentenced Poore to 8 years and 9 months in prison, and sentenced Sells to 2 years and 6 months in prison.
Both defendants confessed to selling oxycodone to an individual who was cooperating with law enforcement officers in Mercer and McDowell counties during September and October 2011. Poore and Sells were indicted on May 22, and pleaded guilty on July 9. At the time of their guilty plea hearings, Poore and Sells were the 15th and 16th guilty pleas in the Bluefield Pill Initiative.
According to a press release from the office of Booth Goodwin, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, West Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations and the Southern Regional Drug and Violent Crime Task Force participated in the investigation.
The Task Force is made up of officers from the state police Mercer, McDowell and Wyoming county as well as the Princeton and Bluefield police departments.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John File represented the government in both hearings. Derrick Lefler represented Poore and William S. Winfrey II, represented Sells. Both defendants were remanded to the custody of U.S. Marshals.
