BLUEFIELD —
Snow showers, high wind gusts and temperatures in the single digits this morning caused treacherous driving conditions throughout the region and may have been a factor in at least one vehicle versus pedestrian accident.
High winds and heavy snow brought near white-out conditions to the area at about 3 a.m., but local temperatures were in the high teens. By 5 a.m., there was 2 to 3 inches of snow on the ground in Bluefield and 15 degree temperatures. The temperature fell to 9 degrees by 8 a.m., with wind chill factors putting the feel-like temperature well below zero.
Sgt. W.C. Tupper, detachment commander of the West Virginia State Police Welch Detachment, said roads in McDowell County are snow-covered and slick. “When people call in, we’ve been telling them just to stay inside,” Tupper said.
