Two fugitives caught in Mercer

BLUEFIELD — Two men wanted by Huntington authorities, including a suspect in an attempted murder investigation, have been nabbed in Bluefield.

Antonio Ward, 31, and Joseph Scott Reeves, 28, were taken into custody following a traffic stop in Bluefield, according to Bluefield Police Chief D.W. Dillow. The arrest was made after Sgt. M.D. McPherson recognized the license plate number on the black 2002 Acura the two men were driving in.

Dillow said Ward is wanted for attempted murder, first-degree armed robbery and first-degree kidnapping and Reeves is wanted on kidnapping, malicious wounding and first-degree armed robbery. McPherson and Patrolman J.S. Shrewsbury conducted the traffic stop at 10 p.m. Sunday night. Ward and Reeves were being held Monday in the city jail awaiting a bond hearing in Mercer County.

Ward is charged with attempted murder in connection with an incident in Huntington where the victim was shot multiple times, according to Lt. John Williams of the Huntington Police Department.

Williams said the incident occurred on March 2 in the east-end section of the city.

“Ward allegedly shot our victim several times,” Williams said. “We were first alerted to it after the victim showed up at the hospital with gunshot wounds. They traced it back to that block.”

Williams said the incident was a “drug deal that went wrong.” The victim in the case was just released from the hospital Sunday. Williams said both Ward and Reeves have Bluefield-area addresses.

Williams said both men will be transferred from Mercer County back to Huntington for arraignment on the Cabell County charges.

“Our concern here is to simply get them back to Cabell County,” Mercer County Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ash said Monday.
