GLEN LYN, Va. —
A West Virginia man who drowned Saturday while fishing on the New River in Giles County was identified Monday by local authorities.
Brian Morris, 31, of Fayette County was fishing on July 7 at the New River when, while wading on the riverbed, he stepped off an underwater ledge, said Giles County Sheriff Morgan Millirons. “He was wading and fishing, and not wearing a life jacket,” Millirons said.
The Giles County Sheriff’s Office was notified at 9:29 a.m. Saturday about a possible drowning between Glen Lyn and Narrows, Va. in the general vicinity of Shumate Falls.
Giles County deputies responded along with the Glen Lyn fire department and rescue squad. The Longshop-McCoy River Rescue dive team, the Virginia Tech dive team, and a helicopter with the Virginia State Police joined in the search, Millirons said.
The body was found in 14 feet of water just before 3 p.m. that day after an extensive search.
Millirons said Morris was fishing with two other people when he stepped off the ledge and disappeared. People fishing on the New River are always advised to use lifejackets, he said.
