TAZEWELL, Va. —
’Tis the season to pay taxes in Tazewell County.
Today is the deadline for county residents to pay their personal and real estate property taxes for 2012, according to county Treasurer David Larimer.
“We do have a lot of folks who wait until the end to pay,” Larimer said. “(Monday) was an extremely busy day. We had them lined up to the door where you come into the office. They can pay them at any bank as long as it is postmarked by December 5 or online at www.tazewellcounty.org. There are still payment options. They can set up payments if they are delinquent but of course penalty and interest charges still apply. Once they get current, they can set up payments for next year’s taxes on their real estate. It (the monthly payments) are spread over a year. The last payment comes out when the tax ticket comes out.”
Larimer said the average rate of uncollected taxes from 2011 was 3.79 percent, which included a 2.96 percent delinquency rate on personal property and 4.6 percent on real estate. That means 96.22 percent of all taxes in the county were paid on time last year.
Larimer is completing his first year as county treasurer after being elected to replace long-time Treasurer Norman Cook, who retired in 2010. Larimer said the office still receives complaints about the tax deadline being at Christmas.
“My response is that I agree it is a difficult time, but the thing to do is to pay on a monthly payment plan,” Larimer said. “We have over 3,000 people that are on it.”
By utilizing a monthly payment plan, the tax bill is divided over a period of 12 months. As a result, the entire tax bill is not due in December.
“As I found out from 11 months on the job, and while I was campaigning for it, tons of people don’t know it (the monthly payment plan) is available,”” Larimer said. “Mr. Cook implemented that before I got here. I just expanded upon it by allowing it to be collected online.”
Larimer said he hopes to expand the monthly payment option in the future to include personal property. The monthly payment plan is currently only available for real estate property.
“My goal is after this tax season ends, I’m going to go to Washington County and visit with them,” Larimer said. “They offer monthly payments on personal property like vehicles. My goal is to offer that.”
