PRINCETON —
A fatal Mercer County shooting was the result of an intense argument, police said today.
In a press conference at the Princeton Police Department, Lt. J.W. Howell said an intense and emotional argument over family issues led to the shooting death of Michael Cardwell, 34, of Bluefield.
Princeton resident Eddie Harmon, 30, shot Cardwell in the upper torso outside his residence on Bee Street, Howell said.
No charges have been filed yet, according to Howell.
The investigation is still ongoing.
Mercer County Prosecutor Scott Ash said Harmon is the alleged shooter.
“Mr. Harmon is cooperating with law enforcement and there has been no arrest at this tme,” Ash said. “The investigation is on-going.
The shooting was reported at approximately 4:15 p.m. at the 400 block of Bee Street in Princeton. Officers dispatched by Mercer County 911 found one person on the sidewalk when they arrived on the scene, Howell said.
Police quickly blocked off the street after they arrived. Howell spoke to the Bluefield Daily Telegraph and other media at the scene. One adult white male had died after being shot, and another adult male who lived at the home had been detained.
“Upon preliminary investigation, they found that there was a struggle between two persons here,” Howell said. “At this time, we can’t release any names pending notification of family, but at this time the case is still under investigation.”
The shooting was being investigated Wednesday evening as a homicide, Howell said. What charges may be filed had not been determined. Police were still gathering evidence, and a firearm had been recovered.
Statements taken at the scene indicated that the men knew each other, Howell said.
“The altercation that occurred between the two men happened on the front porch,” he added. The shooter was inside the home when police arrived, and surrendered to the officers without incident.
The Princeton Fire Department and the Princeton Rescue Squad were also dispatched to the scene.
