AFTERNOON UPDATE: Democratic leaders unite against EPA regulations of greenhouse gas emissions

WASHINGTON — Democratic legislators of the West Virginia and Virginia coalfields have formed a unified front of opposition in an effort to block the Environmental Protection Agency’s efforts to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from stationary sources including coal-burning plants.

U.S. Senator John D. “Jay” Rockefeller IV, introduced legislation on Thursday that would suspend the EPA’s possible suspension for a two-year period. His West Virginia colleagues in the House, U.S. Reps. Nick Rahall and Alan B. Mollohan introduced similar legislation in the House.

U.S. Rep. Frederick C. “Rick” Boucher, D-Va., also joined in introducing the legislation in the House and United Mine Workers President Cecil Roberts added his voice to the chorus of coalfield leaders who are opposing the EPA’s new direction.
