Newspaper industry veteran Darryl Hudson is the new publisher of the Bluefield Daily Telegraph and Princeton Times.
Hudson’s appointment was announced Monday by Frank Wood, senior vice president and division manager for Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. and publisher of The Register-Herald in Beckley.
“Darryl will bring integrity, balance and depth to the talented staffs of our local newspapers as they continue to make positive contributions to the communities in their region,” Wood said.
Hudson, 51, started his newspaper career at the Bluefield Daily Telegraph in 1987 as a circulation district manager. He was named controller for The Daily Telegraph the next year.
Hudson later became a corporate controller for Thomson Newspapers. He held various positions in that company, including director of financial and support systems and chief financial officer at The Repository in Canton, Ohio. He has been director of finance at The Vindicator in Youngstown, Ohio, for the past two years.
Hudson said he will focus on strengthening ties the Bluefield Daily Telegraph and Princeton Times have established with customers.
“Despite the past few years’ changes in the way information is obtained and shared, community newspapers are still the most reliable and trusted source of local news and information,” Hudson said. “However, we still must continue to adapt to the ever changing needs of our readers and advertisers through a mix of both print and electronic products.”
Hudson and his wife, Jackie, have strong ties to the area. He is a 1982 graduate of Bluefield State College. Jackie, the former Jackie Horton, is a graduate of Bluefield High School.
The Hudsons have two children, Rob, 26, who was born in Bluefield, and Lauren, 17, who is attending Hoover High School in North Canton, Ohio. Jackie and Lauren will join Hudson in Bluefield after Lauren completes classes in June.
“My wife and I are very excited about moving back to the Bluefield area,” Hudson said. “We have always considered it home and have returned quite often to visit Jackie’s parents over the years.
“I am also very excited to return to The Daily Telegraph. It is a great local newspaper that is an integral part of this community.”
