PRINCETON – Big snowmen, short snowmen and unique snowmen sprang from this winter’s storms when people in the Virginias took up the Snowman Challenge.
More than 20 snow creations were entered in the new contest organized by the Chuck Mathena Center in Princeton with help from the Princeton-Mercer County Chamber of Commerce.
“We had 24,” said April Lusk, house/box office manager for the Chuck Mathena Center. “Actually, the winners were more from out of town than in town. We had 21 individuals and three businesses.”
The contest was created to give people something to do with the big qualities of snow they were having to shovel every day as fresh storms kept blanketing the region.
“It was really fun,” Lusk said. “I think it brightened up their days.”
Judging the snow creations was difficult.
“It was very hard. Everybody’s was just so good. We had some volunteers and the staff (CMC) and the chamber of commerce gave us their input as well,” Lusk recalled. “We looked at who had utilized the amounts of snow that we had. Then we looked at creativity, and then it was basically based on your favorite. We had a system where we had to rate 1 through 21, 21 being the highest, the most points. And then for the businesses, we had one to three.”
Winners included the following:
•Best Backyard Snowman –20-foot Snowman (Jermey Gates of Wytheville, Va).
•Most Artistic Backyard Snowman – Snow Ma’am (George Walsh and Sky Nichols of Scarbro).
•Third Place Backyard Snowman – Snowman with Orange Cone (Kenny and Allen Stiltner of Pineville).
