PRINCETON —
State police are continuing their investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting in Mercer County.
The incident occurred Saturday at a residence on Surface Hill Road. Police initially responded to a report of a domestic dispute involving a man with a chain saw. Police shot and fatally wounded Jason Dillon, 31, of Surface Hill Road, after he approached a sheriff’s department deputy with a large club-type instrument and refused commands from the deputy to put the weapon down, according to earlier reports.
Mercer County Sheriff Don Meadows said Wednesday the officer involved in the shooting was Deputy M.S. Horne.
Meadows said he did not release Horne’s name immediately because he “wanted to give him a couple of days.”
“I just wanted to give him a little bit of time to gather his thoughts,” Meadows said.
Horne, who has several years of experience in law enforcement, returned to work on Tuesday, Meadows said.
Meadows said West Virginia State Police are continuing the investigation into the shooting, and Mercer County Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ash is involved in the investigation.
“It is still ongoing,” Sgt. D.W. Miller, detachment commander of the West Virginia State Police Princeton Detachment, said Thursday of the investigation.
Miller said evidence from the investigation has been sent to the state police crime lab in South Charleston. He said officials are still working to gather additional information, and looking for and speaking to additional witnesses, as part of the ongoing investigation.
The initial domestic dispute call involved a report of a man attempting to destroy the house with a chain saw. Dillon resided at the same residence, according to an earlier report by Miller.
In all, about 15 officers from the sheriff’s department and the state police responded to the incident following the shooting.
The preliminary investigation has revealed chain saw damage to the walls of the residence, and the main support beam in the basement of the house also was cut with the chain saw, according to an earlier report by Ash. Ash said a woodstove with a fire in it also was knocked over by Dillon during the domestic dispute.
