BLUEFIELD —
A winter storm warning remains in effect this afternoon for most of the region.
Although the temperature in Bluefield was still above freezing at 9 a.m. this morning, forecasters say the temperature is still expected to drop this afternoon. That could lead to brief periods of light freezing rain or sleet before the precipitation turns to all snow, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va.
The winter storm warning states the heaviest snowfall is expected to occur in Southwest Virginia. Snow bands could bring accumulations of 1 to 2 inches per hour especially in the late afternoon and evening hours.
However, the winter storm warning for Mercer, McDowell, Tazewell, Bland, Giles, Wythe and Monroe counties generally calls for accumulations of 5 to 9 inches of wet heavy snow with the potential for more than a foot in higher mountainous elevations. Forecasters also are warning of the potential for power outages due to the heavy snow threat.
