After seven months on the job, Greg Shrewsbury, economic development director for the city of Bluefield announced on Wednesday that he has resigned from his position in order to return to the organization he worked with in the past.
Shrewsbury is a native of Bluefield who returned from Texas to his home town in 2011 after amassing 20 years of business and corporate experience. The city board of directors unanimously approved his appointment to the post on June 12, 2012.
“On December 31st, I tendered my resignation with the city of Bluefield,” Shrewsbury stated in a press release. “I have a personal opportunity that will take me back to an organization I have worked with in the past. “
“During the last six months, I am pleased that a group of energetic individuals teamed together to create an economic development plan for Bluefield. It is also exciting that Jim Ferguson is the new city manager. He is a competent and professional individual, and Jim has a heart for Bluefield.
“I also appreciate the opportunity afforded to me by the board to contribute. Bluefield is on a positive path, and her citizens should feel optimistic. It’s time to be positive! Fight the good fight! As I head back to a corporate environment, I will cherish my stay in Bluefield, my hometown and the town of my parents. I plan to be involved in Bluefield as a private individual, and I will always be connected.”
Bluefield Mayor Linda Whalen said she was saddened by Shrewsbury’s announcement, but recognized that it was an opportunity he had to take.
“Greg has done a terrific job for us,” Whalen said. “We’re really sad he’s leaving but he has a wonderful opportunity and he has to take it.”
Whalen said that Shrewsbury has agreed to continue working with the economic development committee through June. “He’s really put us on a good path,” Whalen said. “We feel very positive about our direction. We appreciate everything that Greg has done for us.” Shrewsbury introduced his economic development plan — “Blue Momentum” — to the city board on Tuesday.
“It has been a real pleasure for me to work with Greg,” Jim Ferguson, Bluefield city manager said. “He is just a super person to work with and he orchestrated our economic development plan. I think anyone who attended that meeting (Tuesday) night would agree that Bluefield has vast potential. I think we have the team in place to move forward.”
Shrewsbury received his undergraduate degree from Bluefield College and his MBA from West Virginia Wesleyan University.
He served in several professional capacities with the Clorox Co., including operations management, communications, public relations and human resources.
