TAZEWELL, Va. —
A Hanover County woman was charged Thursday in connection with the death of Virginia State Police Trooper originally from Tazewell County.
Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller said Angelica C. Valencia, 27, of Doswell, Va., was charged with one count of reckless driving in relation to the death of Virginia State Trooper Andrew D. Fox, 27, of Draper, Va.
Fox was a native of Tazewell, Va.
Fox was directing traffic on Oct. 5, 2012 at the intersection of Theme Park Way and Route 30 during the Virginia State Fair in Hanover County when the collision occurred, Geller said. The 1992 Jeep Cherokee Valencia was driving was heading eastward on Route 30 and went through the intersection where it struck Fox.
Geller said Fox was wearing his reflective traffic safety vest and was standing with other troopers directing traffic when the collision occurred, Geller said. Two troopers on the scene immediately began providing first aid and administered CPR. Fox was then transported to the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond, Va. where he later died from his injuries.
Neither Valencia nor her juvenile passenger was injured during the crash. Geller said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Fox graduated from Tazewell High School and earned his undergraduate degree in agricultural science from Virginia Tech in 2006. After graduation, he worked with the Town of Tazewell Police Department and then joined the Virginia State Police Department. He was a member of the State Police Honor Guard, instructor at the State Police Training Academy, and also served with the Draper Volunteer Fire Department.
Upon graduation from the State Police Academy in 2007, Trooper Fox was first assigned to the Fairfax Division’s Area 48 Office in Springfield. In 2012, he transferred to the Wytheville Division’s Area 24 Office in Pulaski County.
