BLUEFIELD —
Contributions to the Community Christmas Tree continued Saturday as the countdown to the Little Jimmie party continued.
The big party is now only five days away. Donations Saturday of $75 brings this year’s total-to-date to $33,458. The 2012 campaign goal was $30,000. However, by going over the campaign goal, organizers will be able to serve more children this year. When the 2012 campaign was launched last month, event organizers budgeted for 750 children. More than 825 children will now be served at Friday’s party.
In the meantime, teams of volunteer shoppers continue to purchase hundreds of toys at the Bluefield Kmart for Friday’s party. And the shopping will continue into early next week. Two shopping teams led by long-time Community Christmas Tree volunteer Delores French will be shopping next week, along with the East River Street Rods led by Jim Dent and the Bluefield Rotary led by Rev. W.D. Hasty.
And for the second year, the red bags to be distributed Friday will include more than just toys, food, books, gloves and toboggans. TLC Dental Care in Bluefield has once again donated hundreds of toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste for the red bags.
The Daily Telegraph has sponsored the Community Christmas Tree campaign since 1917. The campaign is also known as the Little Jimmie program, a reference to an iconic drawing that has accompanied the campaign kickoff since its early days.
As in year’s past, plans call for giving each child registered for the program a red bag filled with two toys — selected especially for each individual child — and other goodies. This year’s party will be Friday, Dec. 21, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the city auditorium on Stadium Drive in Bluefield.
Those who would still like to contribute to the Community Christmas Tree program can mail donations to: Bluefield Daily Telegraph, c/o Community Christmas Tree, P.O. Box 1599, Bluefield, WV, 24701; or drop them off at the Daily Telegraph office. Checks should be made payable to the Community Christmas Tree Fund.
