BASTIAN, Va. —
Bland County will be getting a little love from the Commonwealth of Virginia thanks to being accepted as one of a handful communities statewide that were selected to participate in the “LOVE Hits The Road” program sponsored by the Virginia Tourism Corporation. The program capitalizes on the popular slogan: “Virginia is for Lovers,” and is designed to encourage Virginia vacationers to have their photographs taken at some or all of the LOVE sign sites.
“The idea is for people to go to all of the love sign sites,” Sherri Dillow, general manager of the Wolf Creek Indian Village said. “We were one of the 11 sites added this year, and I think that brings the total up to 26.”
Dillow said that Bland County will place its LOVE sign outside the Wolf Creek Museum gift shop. The creation of the sign represented a total community effort.
“One of our local businesses, ABB created the two white feathers for the top of the sign and we had a competition in the schools to come up with a design for the sign,” Dillow said. “A Bland High School student, Kara Deaton, created the design. I think we really wowed the Virginia Tourism Corp.”
Deaton, 16, a sophomore at Bland High School said her mother inspired her to take up drawing, and added that she has been drawing since she was about 6 years old.
“I had an original idea and I drew the mountains and a country road as the LOVE sign, but when they told me I needed to use Native American images, I made the L out of a tomahawk, the O out of a dream catcher, the V out of feathers and the E out of wood. I did it in two class periods.”
The LOVE sign will be unveiled during a ceremony scheduled for April 6.
“We are very thankful that the Corporation included us in the program,” Dillow said. “This will draw even more attention to our museum, the Indian village and our county.”
