DAVY —
A person is dead after being struck by a westbound Norfolk Southern mixed freight train Friday morning in McDowell County.
The 38-year-old man was trespassing on a railroad trestle about a mile and a half northwest of Welch at about 7:20 a.m. when he was struck by the train, according to an NS spokesperson. The train was traveling from Roanoke, Va., to Williamson.
The McDowell County Sheriff’s office was dispatched to a call in the Mary Town/Hunting Shirt Bottom area near Davy after receiving a call of a train vs pedestrian, according to a statement released by Sheriff Martin West.
Upon arrival the sheriff’s office confirmed that someone had been struck and died as a result, according to Chief Deputy James Muncy. The unidentified person is a white male approximately 38 years of age and no name is being released at this time pending notification of family. The Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the Norfolk and Southern Railroad Police. Muncy said the case is still be investigated at this time.
