War resident charged with elderly Va. man's slaying

GRUNDY, Va. (AP) — A West Virginia man faces murder and robbery charges stemming from the death of a 78-year-old Virginia resident.

Buchanan County Sheriff Ray Foster tells media outlets that authorities in McDowell County, W.Va., arrested 24-year-old David Hairm Gilbert this week on a fugitive from justice warrant.

The War, W.Va., resident is accused of killing Leroy Shortridge of Grundy. Shortridge's body was found in a creek near his home in November 2011.

A Buchanan County Circuit Court grand jury indicted Gilbert earlier this month on first-degree murder, attempted robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery charges.

Gilbert waived extradition. He's being held at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Haysi.
