BLUEFIELD —
A Raleigh County attorney who represented clients in McDowell, Mercer and Wyoming counties was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison Friday for tax evasion and defrauding the state’s public defender program.
Charles B. Mullins II, 52, of Daniels was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to charges in August 2012, according to U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin. Mullins admitted he failed to pay more than $389,000 in taxes between 2006 and 2009
Mullins also admitted he owes $223,605 to the state’s public defender program and $184,030 to the Alabama-based Daniels Capital Corporation (DCC) for making false statements concerning the amount of actual criminal defense work he performed, Goodwin said.
U.S. District Judge Irene C. Berger ordered Mullins to pay restitution in the amount of $780,146.51. The defendant owes $184,030.85 to DCC, $223,605 to the West Virginia Public Defenders Services (WVPDS), and $372,510.66 to the IRS, according to Goodwin.
