BLUEFIELD —
Kroger announced today that it is closing its Cumberland Road store, and Bluefield Beverage at the Bluefield Industrial Park.
A total of 164 people will be impacted by the closings, according to a company press release. Approximately 110 associates work at Bluefield Beverage located at 219 Industrial Park Road in Bluefield, Va.
The Kroger store on Cumberland Road will close March 30. Under Kroger’s contract with the Local 400 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, the 28 full-time employees may move to other stores in Virginia, depending upon their seniority. Another 26 part-time employees will be laid off.
“These are difficult decisions that we have fought for several years in hopes that economic conditions would improve,” Carl York, a company spokesman, said. “In fact, the operations continue to lose money, and we must reduce expenses to keep our prices competitive and provide a return on investment to our shareholders.”
