AFTERNOON UPDATE: Mercer celebrates 173rd birthday

PRINCETON — No one blew out the 173 candles, but a crowd of 56 people gathered at the intersection of North Walker Street and Honaker Avenue to wish Mercer County a happy birthday.

In addition to leading the group in singing, “Happy Birthday,” Lois Miller, president of Mercer County Historical Society unveiled a sign marking the site of the “Old Town Spring,” donated to Princeton by Captain William Smith in 1837. The spring served as the community’s main water source until 1887.
