— PRINCETON — Ground that was saturated and stream banks that were filled by a rapid melt-off of snow this week combined with two or more inches of rain to cause extensive flooding in several Mercer County communities.
At least 12 people, who were evacuated from their homes on Brush Creek in the early morning hours Saturday were housed over night at local motels, according to Craig Hammond, director of the Bluefield Union Mission. However, standing water in sections of Mercer County made many homes inaccessible in the mid-afternoon.
“I don’t know if I can stand this again,” Mary Cochran, a resident of the Old Bluefield Road in Glenwood Park said. Her basement had about four-feet of water in it and she and her neighbors worked through the night to dig drains to divert any more water into her home.
“If it would have come in another six inches, it would have reached our breaker box, and we might not have any home now,” she said.
