Enjoy veggies, not ethical superiority

— — Another letter condemning carnivores appeared in Tuesday’s paper. The writer seeks to show an ethical justification for the idea of a vegetables only diet.

While in no way being critical of anyone for any food choice, let’s examine the ethics. As a farmer I approach the topic as one who consumes and produces both animal and vegetable sourced food.

The writer can rest assured that every bite of food eaten resulted from the death of animals that “are endowed by individuality, sentience and an ability to experience the same feelings of joy, affection, sadness, and fear that we do.” This is a fact of life. Some must die that you may live. There is no “fortunate” escape to be had by opting for a soy and grain based diet. Consider the burning, starving suffocating death of myriad creatures by the chemical and organic control of “pest” in vegetable production before making claims of ethical superiority for eating vegetables which in itself deprives animals of the food to keep them alive.

Do enjoy your vegetables or a more balanced diet including animal products. We should all be humbled and grateful for the sacrifice by so many creatures for our daily bread.
