I recently read in one of our papers about the conversation going on about this equestrian park or whatever they are calling it now. My question to someone in this area is: What rock or stone did someone turn over to find some of our delegates and also Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin?
The crux of the story was about how this park will provide so much for southern West Virginia when in reality it will only benefit the state and the local city fathers. What we need in this area are manufacturing jobs to provide our citizens a well paying job. Not service jobs that will only, in most cases, provide minimum wage jobs. Our state has a $9 million-plus rainy day fund that it has accumulated, and all this “park’’ will do is help build that fund up even higher.
When are we going to elect people who have some common sense when it comes to the economy of southern West Virginia? I am not a politician nor do I have a degree in economics but my common sense tells me service-type jobs will not help build the economy up in our area. We need jobs that pay reasonably well and that have some health care benefits and a decent vacation plan.
Jobs in parks, service stations, retail businesses, little convenience stores and any other type of service business does not and will not provide our young adults and family men a livable wage, and that is what is really needed here.
Wake up Mercer County and our leaders in Charleston and realize we need good paying jobs. Stop sending them all up north to Beckley and beyond.
