The success of the recent excursion train from Roanoke to Bluefield and the way that the people of Bluefield responded to this opportunity is certainly encouraging. More excursion trains, however, will eventually fall victim to the law of diminishing returns. The riders from Roanoke took advantage of this unique opportunity and, owing to the rarity of the occurrence, the train was filled with excited rail fans and tourists. It is possible, however, that an annual event would be able to maintain the necessary momentum if combined with another unique experience.
Taking advantage of the tremendous holiday light display at Lotito Park, I would like to submit that an annual train could be combined with an “Evening through the Park” occasion. Shuttle buses could bring passengers through beautifully decorated residential areas to the resplendent City Park. Their visit would be replete with Ridge Runner rides, snacks, hot cider, hot chocolate and coffee. The entire city could become a much sought-after holiday destination experience.
