On behalf of the many fans of Marshall University, I ask the Bluefield Daily Telegraph for a more “fair and balanced” coverage of college sports.
If you will refer to the sports section of the Sunday, Oct. 25, edition of the BDT you will see an approximate five-by-seven AP photo of West Virginia University; next you will find a much smaller photo, probably two-by-five, of Concord University; and if you look very closely, you will see in the bottom right-hand corner the first paragraph of an article about a big win for Marshall over UAB. I have noticed this consistent coverage and will add that when Virginia Tech has a game, they take the larger photo, then WVU typically falls second, Concord, if lucky, still gets a photo and a small article, and Marshall is usually pushed to the next page or sometimes even the next day.
I know it is your professional goal to treat all local college teams with fair, unbiased coverage, considering you have a very diverse collection of fans in the two Virginias. Therefore, I felt sure you would welcome this observation.
