To Mayor Whalen, Mark Henne, The City Board, et al: Is there any way to halt the large scale destruction of the beautiful old trees that line the Parkways in South Bluefield? Please try to find a way to stop this.
A very large number of beautiful, 70-plus year-old trees have been professionally removed in the past week.
Many more are marked with a big orange “X”. These trees do not appear to be diseased, and I am told their removal is for the benefit of AEP.
If you will drive down any tree-lined street in South Bluefield today, you will notice all the conspicuously vacant spaces, and the indication that a whole lot more are scheduled to be taken down during the next few days.
If this is being done to accommodate AEP, why can't they be appropriately trimmed [at AEP's expense]?
These trees were planted during the 1930s through a joint effort of the City of Bluefield and several of the major garden clubs of that day. They are an integral part of the beauty of this entire part of town. I
t seems to me the city leadership should be able to have a large voice in what is happening to the trees now.
Please try to put a stop to this mass cutting, at least until there can be a public inquiry about why this is necessary, and what alternatives might exist.
I'm not aware of any publicity or public discussion that this event was about to take place.
