Transfer option could spur problems

I am writing this letter in response to “SOL scores not a reflection of school.” I was very disturbed to hear that the Tazewell County School District even offered this option to you and your child. If every parent, who has children attending the schools that failed to make the AYP (adequate yearly progress), were offered this option took it and transferred their children, there would be no more children in attendance and the school would be forced to close. This would most certainly create an overwhelming number of children in the schools receiving them.

I personally feel that Tazewell Elementary already has too many children in attendance. When you take into account classroom size, size of the building, work already done to buildings, parking and lack of school funds there would be a plethora of new problems. I am completely dumbfounded that this option was even given. By offering this option is their goal to get more schools to close?

Last year I tried, begged to have my children transferred to another school because I was and still am displeased with certain aspects of Tazewell Elementary. Not as a whole, just certain areas, none of which have to do with test scores and AYP. I was told in more ways than one that a transfer was no longer possible. The School Board apparently voted on it during a previous year, only those students who had already transferred before the vote and children of the employees are allowed to attend schools from other areas.

So here I am, unable to transfer any of my children to a school of my preference or a school better suited to their personalities and learning styles. My only option is private or home schooling, neither viable due to the lack of private schools in the area and the fact that I do support my children attending public school. Kudos to the letter writer for not “opting out” of the school your child is attending! I am very sure your support means the world to them, I am so happy for you that your child attends a school you are pleased with.
