I want to say thanks to the governor and the state of West Virginia for my welcome home. I could not begin to tell you how many times as a transplanted Mountaineer that I stood up to my peers even though it jeopardized a $47,000-a-year job. The home I left to find a better life for me and my son. My grandfather and father cut timber in these beautiful mountains all their lives and who knows how many coal miners were saved because of their hard work even though they made a fraction of a miner’s wage. I still stood strong and proud defending my home state.
I was paying into a state retirement system that was, in my opinion, legally robbing me of Social Security. I was accused of owing West Virginia back taxes for money earned in another state despite the fact that I was not a resident of West Virginia. Even though this issue has been resolved it threatened everything that I have worked for the past 28 years. With today’s technology this should not have been a problem. I lost a lot of sleep over a state employee not doing their job correctly! Does it really pay to succeed anymore? One thing is for sure in this life death and taxes.
