On Thursday, Feb. 4, petitions bearing 10,600 signatures were presented on the floor of the West Virginia House of Delegates. Delegate Larry Williams, D-Preston, made the presentation as chairman of the House Select Committee on Senior Issues.
The petitions, originated and developed by the West Virginia Directors of Senior and Community Services asks for an increase in the reimbursement rate for the Aged & Disabled Waiver and Medicaid Personal Care programs. Support by the members of the House of Delegates is overwhelming at 100 percent. It is the right thing to do.
Nursing home costs are three times as much as the costs for a senior to remain in their home and receive care through a home or community-based program. Senior Center directors from across West Virginia know firsthand of the need for these vital services. Senior center directors know, too, that our seniors are among this state’s most precious resources.
Finally, I want to thank all the members of the House of Delegates. Special thanks go to Delegate Williams, Delegate Don Perdue, D-Wayne, Delegate Brent Boggs, D-Braxton, and Delegate Sam Cann, D-Harrison, for their support and kind words. It was not too long ago that directors were subjected to great scrutiny by members of the Legislature. To see the outstanding progress we have made in recent years is truly gratifying. It is good to know they realize that senior center directors across the state are true professionals working hard to serve our clients. Directors have known for some time that senior centers enrich lives.
Robert Roswall,
President
