It has recently been reported that Bluefield’s mayor and Board of Directors are getting behind the push to have “Take Me Home, Country Roads” added to the short list of songs that are already official West Virginia state songs. First four words: “Almost Heaven, West Virginia” says it all. I would imagine it comes as a great surprise to most that “Country Roads” is not already an official state song.
The article omitted one important thing that we all can do to help, let Speaker of the House Rick Thompson know what you think. Email him at speaker.thompson@frontier.com or a quick, polite phone call to his office at 304-340-3210 should do the job. It’s up to him to bring it to the floor. Del. Marty Gearheart, R-Mercer, has the bill in his briefcase and is ready to go.
Thank you Mayor Whalen and city board for getting behind this. And thank you Dreama Denver and the Denver Foundation for starting this idea five months ago. It’s time for all of us to do our part.
