Pets require life-long commitment

— — I am submitting this letter about people who get pets and then decide they cannot handle them or be bothered with them, so they just take them and drop them to fend for themselves.

When you decide you want a pet it is a life-long commitment. In the last six months, there have been five dogs and kittens dropped at my house. They are not old enough to fend for themselves. I am retired and live on a limited budget. I cannot take in all of them.

I adopted one of the dogs and she was going to have puppies; I guess that is why they dropped her. I took her to the vet and had her spayed. My son adopted one of the dogs. We cannot take every one of them. We found them good homes but it is getting very hard to have homes for them.

These people need to think before they get a pet. There is a lot of work to keep them and there are veterinary bills to keep them healthy. Pets are forever, and are not throw-aways. They depend on you.

We contacted the Mercer County Animal Shelter and they would not take any of the animals. I don’t know why the shelter is not taking them.

I know they have a lot of trouble but they need to get better management. I will not give any more donations to them. So people, if you decide you want a pet know that this is a life-long commitment and they are not trash.
