INWOOD —
Authorities say they may need dental records to identify a person who apparently drove the wrong way on Interstate 81 and slammed head-on into a tractor-trailer.
Berkeley County sheriff’s deputies say the sport-utility vehicle collided with the truck early Tuesday morning in the northbound lanes near the Inwood exit. Both vehicles exploded in flames.
Capt. D.S. Richmond says the driver of the 2005 Ford Explorer probably died instantly. He says the body was so badly burned that police can’t tell whether it was male or female.
Media outlets say a passenger in the tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries but the truck’s driver was unhurt.
Richmond says the unidentified body will be sent to the state medical examiner for an autopsy.
The accident shut down I-81 for more than six hours.
