ANNANDALE, Va —
An 88-year-old World War II veteran has received a Bronze Star, nearly 70 years after he earned it.
Jack Faulconer of Gainesville was an 18-year-old infantryman in Gen. George Patton’s Third Army. In 1944, while advancing to the German border, Faulconer’s machine gun squad came under attack. Two squad members were killed, and Faulconer was wounded. He found himself alone behind enemy lines for a time before finding fellow Americans.
Faulconer received a Purple Heart. While he was eligible for a Bronze Star, he never received it until Friday.
He formally received the award Friday from Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., whose office inquired about the medal on Faulconer’s behalf. He was joined at the ceremony by his wife of 65 years, Joyce, whom he met while recovering from his wounds.
