Fire won’t delay UVa practice facility completion

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — University of Virginia officials say a fire won’t delay completion of a new indoor football practice facility.

Chief Facilities Officer Donald Sundgren tells media outlets that the fire damaged about 15 percent of the building’s roof. But the structural steel supporting the metal deck wasn’t compromised.

Sundgren says the $13 million facility will be ready for spring practice in March 2013. It’s scheduled to be completed in February.

The fire broke out Monday afternoon and sent thick black smoke over Charlottesville.

Fire officials believe a worker’s cutting torch ignited insulation in the roof. The roof’s rubber membrane then caught fire.
