Va. nurse accused of taking drugs from W.Va. vets

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — A registered nurse from Virginia is accused of stealing drugs from the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg.

A federal grand jury named 29-year-old Paula High of Virginia Beach in a 78-count indictment this week.

U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld says High is charged with obtaining and possessing prescription painkillers by committing fraud, forgery and deception.

The indictment says the thefts occurred between April 2007 and May 2009.

High worked in the emergency room at the VA hospital and allegedly kept drugs that were intended for patients for her own personal use. The drugs included fentanyl, oxycodone, diazepam and morphine.

Directory assistance has no listing for High, and it's unclear whether she has an attorney.

If convicted, she faces up to four years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count.
