CHARLESTON —
Two years ago, West Virginia officials spent $1.7 million in federal stimulus money on high-speed Internet routers for State Police. Today, only one in the Logan detachment works.
An investigation by The Charleston Gazette determined they lack the proper components, and no one has fixed the problem. The components could cost about $270,000.
State Police have repeatedly asked the grant administrators for advice. But the agency didn’t submit a proposal as the Office of Technology determines how to spend the remaining $9 million.
West Virginia must spend the entire $126.3 million it got by Feb. 13.
Otherwise, it may have to return the unspent money.
The Legislative Auditor’s office is investigating the use of stimulus money. In all, the state spent $24 million on more than 1,000 routers.
