W.Va. miner critical after suffering head injury

FAIRVIEW — A worker trying to put a loaded supply car back on track at CONSOL Energy’s Loveridge Mine is in critical condition after being struck in the head with a tool.

The Charleston Gazette says 51-year-old Glen Cutter of Baxter was in critical condition and on life support late Wednesday.

Hoy Murphy of the state Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training says the accident happened Tuesday night near Fairview.

Cutter was using a long-handled tool called a slate bar, typically used to pry loose material from a mine’s roof and walls. It somehow popped loose and struck him.

Murphy says the investigation will look at whether Cutter was using it to lift the car.

CONSOL spokeswoman Lynn Seay (SEE) says Baxter suffered severe head trauma but didn’t comment further.
