Kitten rescue mission gets surprise gift from Betty White

STILLWATER, Okla. — A growing rescue mission for needy kittens is getting celebrity support in its search for a larger, more permanent home.

Television star Betty White, known for her soft spot for animal charities, has chipped in $300 to help the Tiny Paws Kitten Rescue move from Director Holly Chapples' home to a proper facility.

Chapples said she did a double-take when she was sifting through the mail the other day and found White's check.

"It was shocking," she said. "She is so genuine."

Chapples has been operating Tiny Paws for eight years and lives with about 50 furry, four-legged roommates. Most are orphaned, recently-born kittens that needed special care no other local group can provide.

Chapples is out of room, however, and unsure what she's going to do when the spring litters arrive. Local officials are offering her use of a city-owned building - rent and utility free - provided she can cover the $100,000 cost of fixing up the space. She's raised about $58,000 so far.

Chapples started a fundraising campaign in late November, and a Tiny Paws supporter apparently made sure White knew about it, sending a link to a news report by way of Viacom.

White, 90, is known for a television career that spans more than seven decades. Her long history of supporting animal causes includes work with the Los Angeles Zoo; she helps lead the board of trustees for the non-profit that supports the zoo.
