Wyoming County woman killed during robbery

PINEVILLE — Police have captured a suspect wanted in the slaying of a Wyoming County woman during a robbery.

The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department tells media outlets that 20-year-old John New of Briar Creek was arrested Wednesday morning in Mingo County. New is charged with first-degree murder, grand larceny and daytime robbery.

Police say 60-year-old Elaine Birchfield of Brenton was killed Tuesday evening after she came home and interrupted a robbery. Birchfield’s truck was taken from the scene.

Gilbert police officers saw the truck Wednesday morning, stopped it and arrested New.

The cause of Birchfield’s death hasn’t been released.

Birchfield was a school bus driver whose route served Huff Consolidated School.

Wyoming County Schools Superintendent Frank Blackwell says grief counselors are at the school Wednesday.
